Banned Books Week takes place annually to raise awareness about the dangers of censorship. PEN America found that from July 2021 to June 2022 1,648 unique book titles were affected by challenges and bans in schools in the United States. 41% of those books feature LGBTQ themes or have protagonists or prominent secondary characters who are LGBTQ, and 40% of the books feature protagonists or prominent secondary characters of color. Book bans and challenges disproportionately affect work created by and about LGBTQ people and/or people of color. Censoring these stories harms those creators as well as people looking to see themselves reflected in books or perhaps learn something new. Book bans and challenges don't just happen in schools, but in public libraries as well--they affect everyone's freedom to read.
