Description
The stories behind place names in the Olympic National Park collectively tell its human history. Most significat events in the recorded history of the Olympics (and a few obscure ones) resulted in the naming of a place or places. Indians lived where they found food most plentiful and travel easiest. This was usually where rivers feed into the sea. The results of their occupying such land are visible on today's maps: 12 of the 13 major rivers draining the Olympic Mountains have Inidan names. Many coastal features, particularly in the northwest corner of the Olympic Peninsula, still carry Indian names.
