In chapters that alternate between the past and the present, Cat slowly recalls her life before she and her classmates were trapped inside School, where half of them are mutating, everyone is fearful, and self-destruction seems to be the only means of escape.

Cat never leaves her high school: she lives there, and for a long time her school has provided her with everything she needs. Now things are changing: the hallways contract and expand along with the school's breathing, and the showers in the bathroom run a bloody red. Her best friend is slowly turning into cardboard, and instead of a face, Cat has a cat mask made of her own hardened flesh. Cat doesn't remember why they are trapped in the school, but escaping has always been impossible. But to save herself from the eventual self-destruction all the students face, Cat must find the way out.
